Where is Long Life?

Once, he was sitting and learning in the Ginasor Valley, and he observed someone climbing to the top of a palm tree and taking the mother bird with the young, and climbing down without incident. After Shabbat, he observed another person climb to the top of a palm tree, take the young, shoo the mother away, climb down, get bit by a snake, and die. He said, “It is written, ‘Shoo the mother away, and the young you shall take for yourself, so that all will be well with you, and your days shall be lengthened (Deut. 22:7).’ How was it well for this one? And, where is his long life?”  (Ruth Rabba (Vilna Edition) Parasha 6, D”H 4 [13] “lini”)
