Trajan Executes Lulianus and Pappus

When Trajan was about to execute Lulianus and his brother Pappus in Laodicea [Lydia] he said to them, “If you are of the people of Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, let your God come and save you from my hands, just as he saved Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah from the hands of Nebuchadnezzar.” They replied, “Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah were completely righteous men and it was fitting that a miracle was made for them; and Nebuchadnezzar also was a worthy king, and it was fitting that a miracle would be performed through him. Evil, common one; it is not fitting that a miracle be performed through you. We deserve death from God. If you will not kill us, God has many other agents of death. God has many bears and lions in his world who can attack us and kill us. The Holy One blessed be He only delivered us into your hand so that in the future He may exact punishment of you for our blood.” Despite this he killed them immediately. It is reported that they had not moved from there when officials from Rome arrived and split his skull with clubs.(B. Brachot 18:)
