Relating to Non-Jews and Converts

Rabbi Abahu recited a braita before Rabbi Yohanan: Idolaters and the shepherds of sheep and goats should not be rescued from a well but they should not be pushed in, either. However, heretics, informers, and apostates should be pushed down a well and not rescued. Rabbi Yohanan said, “I have been learning regarding ‘Every lost item of your brother’s’ (the Biblical law requiring the return of a lost object) that ‘brother’ includes an apostate, yet you say push him down a well!”(B. Avodah Zarah 26:)

Rav Nahman bar Yitshak said in the name of Rabbi Assi, “I saw Rabbi Yohanan eat meat shechted by a Samaritan (an act contrary to a law of Rabban Gamaliel’s court).” Rabbi Assi also ate from Samaritan shechita. (B. B Hullin 5:)

“Haman told Zeresh his wife, and to all his close friends, everything that had happened to him. His sages and Zeresh his wife told him…” (Esther 6:13). Rabbi Yohanan said, “Anyone, even from among the nations of the world, who says a word of wisdom, is called a “sage.” (by the Bible).  (B. Megillah 16.)
