Four Entered the Pardes (Garden)

Four entered the Pardes, and they are: Ben Azzai, Ben Zoma, Acher (“Other One”), and Rabbi Akiva. Rabbi Akiva said to them, “When you draw near to the pure marble, don’t say, ‘Water, water!’ for it is written, ‘one who speaks falsehoods is unable to stand before my eyes (Psalms 101:7).” Ben Azzai peeked and died. About him, scripture says, “Precious in HaShem’s eyes is the death of the pious (Psalms 116: 15).” Ben Zoma peeked and went insane. About him scripture says, “You found honey, eat enough, lest you become full and vomit it up.” Acher cut the saplings. Rabbi Akiva exited in peace. (B.Hagigah 14:)
