Rabbi Eleazar ben Azariah

Rabbi Eleazar ben Azriah was active at Yavneh (Jabneh) during and subsequent to Rabban Gamaliel’s tenure as the leader of the community (sometime after 70- to early 2nd century), though he is depicted as having been considerably younger than his colleagues. He was wealthy, descended from a prestigious family, and seems to have been blessed with a particularly politically astute wife. Although he earned the approval of Rabbi Yehoshua, he seems to have preserved his independence from that circle.
